It is time to familiarize yourself with the cases, so that you can make an informed decision when it is time to choose. After watching the video(s) and looking at the other artifacts, click on the button below to do some additional research on your own.

Week 1: Learning the Language & the Cases |
Whether you play the role of an attorney, defendant, or witness, you will need to understand and use some basic legal terminology. Your class will participate in a few activities and at least one contest using the legal terms linked under the picture.
Good Luck! |
Week 2: Team Building & Beginning Investigation |
Now that you have your legal team, your first task is to create your team contract. Work together to form your norms and consequences. Your team will work most effectively if you are all on the same page and hold yourself (and each other) to the same standards.
After last week's activities, you should already be familiar with cases. By the end of PBL on Tuesday, your team should submit their case selection by clicking the button under the picture. You will then download the Investigative Case File and begin your official investigation.

Week 5:Witness Research & Prep & Podcast 1 |
If you did, you will move straight to preparing your witnesses. Choose who will be your prosecuting attorney. Then, you should identify three people who you can call to the stand to testify in support of YOUR case. The newly appointed defense teams will need to prepare witnesses to prove your case WRONG. So make sure that you choose the strongest witnesses who can testify about the most compelling evidence.
Crime Board: Due 3/20:
Your other task to begin this week is creating a "crime board." Click below to see directions and examples. Make sure to create it in a way that will be USEFUL to your case. |
If your case did NOT make it past the grand jury, you will become the defense team for one of the suspects/defendants being charged by one of the prosecutions. Choose who will be your defense attorney. You will receive the investigative case file from the prosecution team you will now be going against on Monday. Whoever they name as the suspect in that file (and on their arrest report) becomes your client/the defendant. Your job is now to prove his innocence, or build reasonable doubt by supplying a different theory and/or suspect. Spend Monday & Tuesday outlining your defense (linked below) and determining which witnesses you will call (linked below).
Most importantly, decide whether or not the defendant will take the stand! |
Podcast 1: Due 3/3 |
Week 6:Exhibit Prep,Podcast 2, & Trial Script |
|
You should spend Monday and Tuesday completing your exhibits and letting your attorney practice questioning the witness.
On Wednesday, you will meet with opposing legal team. Locations will remain the same. The meeting agenda will be posted in the room. After your meeting with the opposing team, you should spend Thursday and Friday making any necessary revisions to your trial script.
Podcast 3: For your third and final podcast, you should interview your attorney and one of your witnesses. Use this same music and intro. This podcast should be 2-3 minutes long. |
The big day is here!
On Monday, you will meet with opposing legal team. Locations will remain the same. The purpose of the meeting is to do a run through for the trial.
Your trial takes place this week. Make sure you turn in your permission slip, bring money for lunch, and dress for court. No shorts and t-shirts. No sweatpants. Look your best. Since students in other PBLs will not be able to attend the trials, we will use photographs and video clips of the trials to create a highlight reel for them to view. |
