Project Overview:Home State Heritage will be focused on students exploring the traditions and culture of North Carolina and conduct field research that will be exhibited during an expo night where students will create a living history museum exhibit. The exhibit will interactively teach other young people in our community about the vast traditions and culture of our state. This expo will be for the whole community to attend!
|
During the first week, students will have the opportunity to visit the heritage fair where they will meet community experts and see them display their trade. Students will be able to interact with the presenters, asking questions about their trade or skill. This event is intended to inspire students to learn more about North Carolina's tangible and intangible heritage.

Week 1:Understanding Heritage |
The first week will focus on exploring the concept of heritage and recognizing our own local heritage in North Carolina. Students will be exposed to a variety of topics through their own research and through a local heritage fair. Students can use the heritage fair as a starting place to make connections with experts in the community and to be exposed to the wealth of traditions that exist in our state. By the end of this week, students will examine not only our state's heritage, but also our school's.

Week 2: Team Contract & Topic Proposal
|
Please use the team contract guidelines to create your own team contract. This is due on February 13th.
|
Topic Proposal:
This week, students will decide (as a team) which specific branch of NC heritage they want to focus their research on. They will build their team proposal. Students will conduct research that will help build their understanding of their topic and begin thinking about ideas for interview subjects to be used in their digital story. Additionally, now is the time to let us know what you need to make your project a success. Would you like to visit someplace? Meet with an expert? Let us know by filling out the google form linked below.

Week 3: Action/Interview Plan |
Action Plan:
During this time students will work on the logistics of their project and products. They will use the "Action/Interview Plan" organizer in order to do so. It will be checked by the advisor as checkpoint 3. All group members should be engaged in this process. |
|
Week 4: Digital Story & Art Piece |
As you have learned, heritage is all about having a lasting effect, or "leaving your mark", on a place. You have spent several weeks learning all you can on one specific topic of North Carolina heritage. Now it is time to symbolically represent that piece of heritage on a 10x10 canvas. This canvas will be displayed here on campus, long after you graduate. This is your opportunity to show what you have learned, visually represent it, and leave YOUR mark on West Rowan. You need to design your 10x10 canvas before you start. Painting is an option, but you can do any type of visual that can be displayed on that canvas (i.e. drawing, scrapbook, collage, quote, etc). For planning purpose, your group must submit a detailed paragraph that describes your plan for the piece and HOW it is symbolic of the heritage of North Carolina. In addition, you must submit a sketch (or a photo of the sketch) of what your finished panel will look like.
